Clamshell Buckets are hydraulic equipment which are available in two main categories: for digging: with vertical cylinders and the profile of the tines is designed to ensure a high penetration; for loading: with horizontal cylinders so as to reduce the overall height and geometric design of the tines allows maximum filling.

Clamshell grab buckets: the perfect solution for loading earth and aggregates

Clamshell buckets are gripping devices formed by two shells in synchronous movement, put in motion by double acting hydraulic cylinders, with a single hydraulic circuit. Clamshell buckets are roughly classified by the number of cylinders (one or two) and by the constructive geometry (vertical or horizontal cylinder). Each of these technical features corresponds to certain functional characteristics that make a specific clamshell bucket more appropriate to a precise use. In general terms, buckets with horizontal cylinder like MH series, which are more compact, are intended to load loose materials such as sand, soil and gravel. This configuration is also ideal for rail-road loaders, working in rail construction and maintenance, where the overall height of the machines is critical. On the other hand, buckets with vertical cylinders are provided of much higher clamping force, which allows them to have a better penetration in hard materials like compact soil. That’s why vertical cylinders buckets are better suitable for digging. All clamshell buckets are equipped with wear-resistant steel blades and can be equipped with bolt-on digging teeth. Mikron hydraulic attachments are entirely made of high-tensile steel Weldox or Domex for structural parts, and of wear-resistant steel Hardox HB400 in the parts that come into contact with the handled materials, such as the tips of the polyps and the wear blades of digging grabs. All the pins are made of stainless steel; bushes are case hardened. All hydraulic cylinders are generously dimensioned and provided with a safety valve, to ensure a firm grip and to avoid any accident. Heavy-duty equipment, like PV orange peel grapples, mount cylinders with hydraulic cushioning. Most of Mikron hydraulic equipment comes with a well-protected hydraulic circuit: flexible pipes are protected by the outer structure and are coated, to prevent breakages in contact with the materials. Each equipment has a full range of accessories, always ready on stock

Clamshell grab buckets and hydraulic clamps can be offered with a comprehensive range of accessories, which can increase their versatility. A tool with a proper optional can be more efficient and effective for a specific application. The most common accessories for clamshell buckets are hydraulic rotators. But Idrobenne can also provide special adapters, free rotation devices, bolt-on digging teeth, replaceable cutting edges, suspension links, brackets and adapters for all types of hydraulic quick couplers.

Clamshell grab buckets, orange peel grapples and log grapples are generally mounted through a cardan link, which allows the tool to swing in the 4 directions with respect to the arm of the machine (that’s the so-called “pendulum mounting”). Idrobenne offers tailor-made links for any crane or excavator. On demand, the Company can also supply equipment with a special treatment to allow the grapple for marine use (salt water is a very hard environment and requires some special features).
